Group of Eight Results
Introduction
The Group of Eight (Go8) comprises Australia's leading research institutions: the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, the University of Western Australia, the University of Adelaide, Monash University and UNSW Sydney.
Background
EI 2018 is a companion exercise to Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018, and data collected for ERA 2018 forms part of the EI 2018 assessment. These data were augmented by case studies prepared by institutions, which were in turn qualitatively assessed across 25 units of assessment (UoAs). The UoAs comprise the 22 broad FoRs—with FoR 11 split into Public Health, and Biomedical and Clinical Sciences—and two additional UoAs labelled as Indigenous and Interdisciplinary.
These UoAs are assessed along three dimensions: Engagement, Impact and Approach to Impact – the only exception is Engagement, where the Indigenous and Interdisciplinary UoAs are not assessed. Each UoA in which an institution submits is given a rating of “high”, “medium”, “low”, “not assessed” or “request not to assess” for each of Engagement, Impact and Approach to Impact. The definitions of each rating can be found under Rating Scales section on the EI Assessment page.
Purpose
This report provides an overview of the results for the Go8 institutions across Engagement (up to 23 UoAs rated per institution), Impact (up to 25 UoAs) and Approach to Impact (up to 25 UoAs). The report is structured into two sections. The first section summarises the Go8 results by high, medium and low. The second section provides more detailed results across all UoAs for all Go8 institutions.
Additional information about the Engagement & Impact assessment can be found on our Interpreting the data page and The EI Assessment page. Further information is available on the ERA intranet site.
Summary of results
The following chart summarises the ratings that the Go8 institutions received in the first EI assessment, grouped by rating across Engagement, Impact and Approach to Impact. As this is the inaugural assessment, no comparisons to previous years are available.

Detailed results
The following heat map show the ratings received by each Go8 institution in each UoA. As with the Sydney results, no comparisons to previous years are available.
Some UoAs have been given a composite rating—for example, UQ received a rating of “High/Low” in 12 Built Environment and Design—and in these cases, the corresponding cells in the heat map have been coloured as the higher of the two ratings. Hover over a box to view more information.
