Sydney's Results

Introduction

The Engagement and Impact (EI) assessment is designed to provide insight into how Australian institutions are “translating their research into economic, social, environmental and others impacts”. EI 2018 aims to create incentives for greater collaboration between institutions and industry, and stronger engagement with research end-users.

Background

EI 2018 is a companion exercise to Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018, and data collected for ERA 2018 forms part of the EI 2018 assessment. These data were augmented by case studies prepared by institutions, which were in turn qualitatively assessed across 25 units of assessment (UoAs). The UoAs comprise the 22 broad FoRs—with FoR 11 split into Public and Allied Health Sciences, and Biomedical and Clinical Sciences—and two additional UoAs labelled as Indigenous and Interdisciplinary.

These UoAs are assessed along three dimensions: Engagement, Impact and Approach to Impact – the only exception is Engagement, where the Indigenous and Interdisciplinary UoAs are not assessed. Each UoA in which an institution submits is given a rating of “low”, “medium”, “high” or “not assessed” for each of Engagement, Impact and Approach to Impact. The definitions of each rating can be found under What do these results mean? on the Interpreting the data page.

Purpose

This report provides an overview of the results for the University of Sydney across 73 ratings: 23 UoAs rated for Engagement, 25 UoAs rated for Impact and 25 UoAs rated for Approach to Impact. The report is structured into two sections. The first section summarises the University’s ratings by high, medium and low. The second section provides more detailed results across all UoAs.
